Sore After a Massage? What to Do Next
Some mild soreness after a massage is normal, especially after deeper work. What it feels like, how long it lasts, and what to do after your session.
Some mild soreness after a massage is normal, especially after deeper work. It feels much like the day after a workout, and it usually fades within a day or so.
Here is what to expect, and what to do after your session at our studio in Westchase, Tampa.
Why you might feel sore
Deeper work reaches muscles that have been tight for a long time. During the session, those spots can feel intense. Afterward, they can feel a little tender, like the day after a workout. You are most likely to notice it after deeper work, like a Deep Tissue session.
What to do after your massage
- Drink plenty of water.
- Give your body time to rest.
- Move gently. Light stretching helps.
- Use gentle heat. A warm shower is an easy way to do it.
- Notice how your body responds over the next day.
How long does it last?
It usually fades within a day or so. If you are still sore after that, or something does not feel right, text us at 813.797.0406 and tell us what you are feeling.
If it sounds like more than massage should handle, we will tell you and suggest you see your doctor.
Can you avoid soreness?
You set the pressure the whole time. Deep work should feel firm, not painful. We warm the area first and go deeper only as the muscle allows, never forcing it. If anything feels like too much during the session, say the word and we adjust right away.
If you were sore after your last massage, tell us at the start, and we will set the pressure with that in mind.
What we tell you at the end
At the end of every session, we tell you what we noticed: what we felt, and habits that may add to it. Then we give you an honest word on whether and when to come back.
How often is up to you. Some clients come weekly, others book when their body asks for it. Both are fine, and we are glad to help you find a rhythm that works.
